GC Corporation “Gazenergostroy” presented the results of work at the facilities in Dzerzhinsk to deputies, officials, and ecologists

Invited by the government of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, well-known Russian officials and scientists, whose field of activity is directly related to the environment, visited the Negative Environmental Impact objects in Dzerzhinsk (the White Sea slurry pit, the Igumnovo domestic solid waste landfill, and the Black Hole dumpsite of industrial waste) as part of parliamentary control.

The results of activities carried out by GC Corporation “Gazenergostroy” were observed by Viacheslav Fetisov, Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, UN Environment Patron of the Polar Regions of the UNEP (United Nations Environment Program) for the Arctic and Antarctic, Ivan Starikov, Director of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “All-Russian Research Institute of Environmental Protection “VNII Ekologiya”, Andrey Betin, Deputy Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region, Sergey Alekseev, Chairman of the Committee on Nature Management and Ecology of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation, and Elena Zlenko, Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Agrarian and Food Policy and Environmental Management.

 

 



The observers were shown high-tech equipment for hazardous waste disposal and told about innovative methods of work at objects that are unparalleled in Russia.

 

 

 


The officials were able to see firsthand the effectiveness of the Corporation's activities, which minimized the negative environmental impact and significantly improved the environmental situation in Dzerzhinsk. 

 

 

More than 100 ha of land are restored and returned to a natural environmental condition; ingress of harmful substances into the water area of the Volga is prevented; regular landfill ignitions are stopped; the local residents are saved from the stinking dumpsites—these are probably the most important goals that have been achieved at the objects.

 

 

At the end of the visit, the observers shared their impressions:

 


Ivan Starikov, Head of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “All-Russian Research Institute of Environmental Protection “VNII Ekologiya”: “Our Institute carried out an examination based on the results of the work. The Commission consisted of 16 scientists headed by Aleksandr Solovyanov, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Today, both Igumnovo and White Sea are completely reclaimed. Black Hole uses unique technologies of oxygen-free thermal disinfection and elimination. This can be a very good experience that will be useful all over the world. But, first of all, in Russia, because we have a lot of dangerous objects within our country.”

 

 

Sergey Alekseev, Chairman of the Committee on Nature Management and Ecology of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation: “The reclamation of Igumnovo, White Sea, and Black Hole has shown that the applied technological solutions have made Russia a world leader in the environmental sphere. We see an example of how the work that had been talked about for decades was done in a year and a half. We see substantive results: a green beautiful hill instead of Igumnovo, a meadow with nectar sources instead of White Sea, just right for building an apiary. Black Hole will be eliminated in the near future. It is necessary to develop an industry for nature restoration on the basis of such technologies. Implementation of environmental projects is supported by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation. The Chamber provides assistance to companies focused on achieving high eco-standards, import substitution, and involvement of domestic technologies, including in the implementation of the Ecology national project. I personally saw the scope and quality of work to eliminate harm in Dzerzhinsk. Such solutions correspond to common practice: in this case, the entire technological process of “Gazenergostroy” from design to implementation using their own materials and equipment can significantly reduce the budget of activities and their implementation time.”

Viacheslav Fetisov, Deputy of the State Duma of Russia, UN Environment Patron: “I am happy to come here today. I am convinced now that there are the unique technology of eliminating the environmental damage accumulated in Russia. We will not only replicate them in our country, but also show them to the whole world. Solving environmental problems is a common task for the whole Earth, and Russia has all the opportunities to lead these activities. Our state should pay more attention to these issues, and it is time for businesses to stop earning money from the environment. Soon, all those who do not meet environmental standards will leave the market.”

 



Andrey Betin, Deputy Governor of Nizhny Novgorod Region: “Under the Clean Country federal project, money has already been allocated for eliminating the Shuvalovskaya dumpsite. We will start work this year. In addition, acid sludge and the Balakhna dumpsite, a large petrochemical waste dump in Pavlov, were recently included in the state register of objects of damage accumulated. In the future, this will allow us to include them in the Ecology national project and receive federal funds for their elimination.”

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Information reference

 

Corporation “Gazenergostroy” started work on the sites in 2016 as part of the Ecology national project. The total volume of waste at the three sites amounted 13.3 million tons. The contract value at that time was about 7 billion rubles.

 

Documentation regarding White Sea and Igumnovo is currently being prepared on the acceptance of the contractor's work, and all the necessary measures under the state contract have been completed. Later, the authorities of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, as well as specialists from “Gazenergostroy”, will monitor the objects and resolve the issue of further use of land plots.

 

Work at Black Hole continues and, according to the new time constraints of the state contract, is planned to be completed in the 3rd quarter of 2021. The lake proved to be the most difficult object to purify. It turned out that the amount of pollution was 57% higher than the original calculations carried out by the predecessor of the current contractor back in 2012. During the work, additional 5.7 thousand cubic meters of waste of hazardous classes II–III were found.

 

 

To date, a significant part of the activities has been carried out at Black Hole: pumping out liquid and pasty toxic substances; putting into operation a plant for their processing using a unique technology of thermolysis destruction and thermal neutralization of accumulated waste with afterburning of flue and thermolysis gases and their purification; beginning of recultivation of the dumpsite using geomembrane insulating coatings and gold soil.
